DEMOGRAPHICS

Population growth across South Florida has exceeded the national average for years, reaching 6.1 million residents in 2021. Over the last 10 years, the population of South Florida has increased 7.5 percent while the U.S. population increased 7.1 percent. Broward County reaches above the ten-year South Florida growth rate at 8.6 percent. The Greater Broward County area benefited from population growth trends that were accelerated by the pandemic with people fleeing from high density, tax burden northeastern states. The migration of companies looking to expand their footprint into the area in 2021 included West Marine, Atento, Icon International, and American Queen Voyages and GameStop. West Marine relocated from Santa Cruz, California, while Atento relocated from South America. GameStop expanded their operations from Texas and settled into Pembroke Pines specifically.

BROWARD COUNTY HOUSING OVERVIEW

- Broward County ranks dead last in Florida with only 25 affordable homes for every 100 families.
- United Way of Broward County just launched Housing United, a five-year strategic program to bring together the public and private sectors to tackle the county’s most pressing need: building homes struggling working residents can afford to rent or buy.
- Billionaire MacKenzie Scott, who has given $12 billion of her personal fortune to nonprofits around the country since divorcing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in 2019, recently donated $10 million for the ambitious effort to add 2,500 affordable housing units in Broward by the end of 2027.
